Kia’s all-new luxury flagship saloon, theK9, has gone on sale in Korea, introducing Kia to an entirely new segment of the global automotive market. The striking new rear-wheel drive will be launched in a number of key overseas markets starting in the fourth quarter of 2012.
With a 5,090 mm overall length and 3,045 mm wheelbase, K9 offers generous front and rear occupant space. Overall width and height are 1,900 mm and 1,490 mm, respectively, which creates a spacious cabin environment.
Initially, K9 will be available in some overseas markets powered by an upgraded 290 ps Lambda V6 3.8-litre MPI engine, with a 334 ps 3.8-litre GDI engine joining the global engine line-up next year.
The all-new saloon will premiere a range of advanced luxury features and technologies, including fully adaptive all-LED headlamps, Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS), radar-based Blind-Spot Detection (BSD), a 17-speaker Lexicon (by Harman) sound system, Smart Cruise Control (SCC) and an Around-View Monitor (AVM) with four cameras.
Every K9 comes with Kia’s all-new eight-speed automatic transmission. The wide spread of gear ratios guarantees brisk acceleration and high-speed refinement, while shift-by-wire (SBW) technology with a joystick control delivers fast, smooth gear changes.
“K9 is all about elegant simplicity, balanced proportions and simple surfaces,” says Kia’s Chief Design Officer, Peter Schreyer. “The class-leading long wheelbase, the prestige distance, large wheels, sharply upright short overhangs and a long sweeping shoulder line all work together in a harmony to give Kia K9 a sporty, athletic proportion and a confident stance quintessential to a premium large rear-wheel drive vehicle.”
“K9 is a clear signal of our intention and determination to compete head-to-head with the European luxury brands. And for Kia, our customers, and for me – this car is like a dream come true,” concludes Schreyer.

Recently, we had the opportunity i30 wagon, while the sportier 3-door i30 is still being kept under wraps.
Korean Hyundai i30 fan club members have recently caught a prototype of the 3-door i30 during its final pre-production testing session. Looking closely at the spy shots, it appears that Hyundai has given the i30 3-door a distinct identity, which resulted in more aggressive exterior styling.
According to Hyundai Europe boss Allan Rushforth, the Korean automaker will being considering a hot variant, with the 1.6 gasoline direct injection with turbo (T-GDi), used in the Veloster Turbo (that also come to Europe) with around 180-190 hp. But now, I have a question, could it be this i30 hot hatch a rival to the Veloster Turbo?

Following its world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show, Hyundai UK has today announced full pricing and specification for the New i20, which will be available in showrooms on 7 May 2012.
Prices for i20 start at £9,995 on-the-road for the three-door 1.2 petrol Classic model, while at the other end of the spectrum the range-topping 90ps 1.4 CRDi Style model costs £14,295.
To further enhance the i20’s appeal, Hyundai’s designers have given the car an attractive exterior makeover that features new wheel designs plus a hexagonal front grille that is in keeping with Hyundai’s current fluidic sculpture design. Further design changes to the front end include new rounded front wings while the reshaped bonnet and headlights continue the theme along with new fog light clusters and daytime running lights. Moving to the rear, the New i20 gets a redesigned rear bumper and taillights, which helps to add to the i20’s fresh approach.
Hyundai has added in even more value to the i20 package with the Active trim, which adds 15-inch alloy wheels, Bluetooth with voice recognition, electric/heated door mirrors, front fog lights, leather steering wheel and gear knob and electric rear windows (five door bodystyle) when compared with Classic. The range-topping Style model is equipped with16-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlights, rain sensing front wipers, climate control along with an automatic dimming rear view mirror with an integrated reversing camera – the first standard application of this technology in the segment. These standard features are traditionally only found on bigger and more luxurious cars as optional extras, but with the New i20 they are all part of the overall package. Buyers wanting even higher levels of technology and features can order the Convenience Pack, which encompasses keyless entry, engine Start/Stop button, chrome exterior door handles and supervision cluster.
Tony Whitehorn, President and CEO Hyundai Motor UK, says: “The New i20 is yet another model to join Hyundai’s new-look model range and will appeal to existing UK customers but will also prove an attractive choice for young buyers who may not have considered Hyundai in the past. It has been given a thorough revision both inside out and with high levels of specification will appeal to customers who want value for money without compromising on quality.”
“In addition, the i20 range will feature the cleanest internal combustion diesel engine in terms of CO2 emissions with the 1.1-litre unit emitting just 84g/km. This showcases Hyundai’s considerable efforts in optimising existing technologies to reduce fuel consumption and emissions from its range of cars. As with all new Hyundai cars, the i20 is backed by our 5 Year Triple Care warranty for complete peace of mind.”
Hyundai has improved upon the popular 1.2-litre petrol engine, which is now cleaner, more efficient and more powerful than the model it replaces. Maximum output is now 85ps (79ps for the outgoing variant) while improvements in fuel consumption from 55.4mpg to 57.7mpg on the combined cycle, plus emissions reductions from 119g/km CO2 to 114g/km CO2 make the 1.2 petrol engine one of the most efficient around.
Furthermore, the 1.2-litre petrol i20 is now available in Style trim and for just an additional £750 above the Active trim. This represents fantastic value for buyers looking for luxury features at an affordable price.
Headlining i20’s eco-credentials is the Blue Drive variant, which is powered by Hyundai’s ultra-efficient 1.1-litre “U-ll” three-cylinder diesel engine that combined with Intelligent Stop and Go (ISG) and low rolling resistance tyres emits a mere 84g/km – making it the lowest-emitting diesel engine in the UK. Coupled with low emissions, the i20 Blue is capable of returning 88.3mpg on the combined cycle.

The Hyundai Veloster has been a bit polarizing since it went on sale last year. And the debate could get more animated if the Korean company does what we think it’s thinking about doing.
At a recent gathering of reporters and Hyundai executives in Ann Arbor, MI, where the annual Rolling Sculpture Car Show takes place every summer, Autoblog asked Hyundai Motor America chief John Krafcik what he planned to bring this year (the college town is also home to Hyundai America Technical Center). Last year, they showed off the new Veloster.
Redone Santa Fe? Neither seems appropriate for the tone of the event. So, we threw this out: “How about chopping the top off the Veloster and see the reaction?” Krafcik and PR man Jim Trainor started trying to make poker faces, indicating to us that we may well have stumbled on to a future project, Rolling Sculpture or no. But we aren’t sure.
Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post’s poll.
Some thought the Veloster was an answer to a question that nobody had been asking, but the unique coupe is proving to be a great sales and image success for Hyundai. Krafcik has shown a great instinct for design and engineering the Genesis Coupe. A former product development executive at Ford, it’s hard to think he would not be the current product development chief in Dearborn had he stayed, and not been scooped up by Hyundai a decade ago.
Hyundai’s sales have been supply constrained on many of its models, including the Veloster. Given a finite supply of Veloster models that it can source from Korea, John Krafcik plans to emphasize production of the upcoming Turbo model. That strikes us as a smart move.
