5f7e954013er 1 3.jpg Golden Steering Wheel for Peter Schreyer

Never before has design been so important in the automotive industry, a statement now substantiated by the decision of the jury of the 2013 Golden Steering Wheel awards. In one of the car industry’s most prestigious awards programmes, Peter Schreyer, President and Chief Design Officer of the Hyundai Motor Group, has received the Honorary Golden Steering Wheel, awarded for outstanding achievements in the automotive industry.

Bavarian-born Schreyer has been Chief Design Officer at Kia Motors since 2006 and was appointed President of all Hyundai-Kia Design Centres at the beginning of 2013. With overall design responsibility for the world’s fifth largest car manufacturer, Schreyer is only the second designer in the 31-year history of the Golden Steering Wheel to receive the award. Giorgetto Giugiaro received it in 1995.

The most recent recipients of the award include Ferdinand Piëch, Chairman of the Volkswagen Supervisory Board (2012), Alan Mulally, CEO of Ford Motor Company (2011) and Norbert Reithofer, CEO of BMW (2010). The competition is organised by Bild am Sonntag and AutoBild, and the official presentation ceremony will take place on 12 November 2013 in Berlin.

“I am exceedingly proud to receive this important award. It is a great honour for me personally, and at the same time it is recognition for our design teams all around the world who for years have been delivering such excellent work,” said Schreyer. The designer was responsible for creating Kia’s distinctive, multiple-award winning design language, and his ‘Tiger Nose’ – the signature Kia radiator grille – has since become a striking brand feature.

“Kia Motors Corporation gave me the unique opportunity to start from scratch and give an automobile brand a completely new, characteristic face. Overall design responsibility for the entire Hyundai Motor Group has added to this the exciting challenge of taking the Hyundai design forward and at the same time clearly differentiating the design strategies of the two brands,” explained the 60-year-old designer.

Peter Schreyer trained at the Munich University of Applied Sciences and the London Royal College of Art, which presented him with an honorary doctorate in 2007. Prior to joining Kia, Schreyer was responsible for the design of pioneering models such as the Audi TT, Volkswagen’s new Beetle and the Volkswagen Passat.

At Kia, Schreyer has developed a design philosophy that stands for simplicity and clarity, which has made a considerable contribution to the success of the brand – in the past five years, Kia has doubled its global sales and in 2012 sold more than 2.7 million cars. The Hyundai brand has also enjoyed strong growth in recent years, taking total sales to 7.1 million units last year. More than 155,000 of these cars went to Germany, where the group is presently the biggest car importer.

Under Schreyer’s leadership the Kia Design Studios in Korea, the United States and Frankfurt have created a number of striking cars. These include the cult crossover Kia Soul, the dynamic compact SUV Kia Sportage, the elegantly sporty Kia Optima, the Kia POP electric concept car, the Kia GT design study and the sporty, compact four-wheel drive Kia provo concept.

The entire Kia model range now features Schreyer’s design signature. The final model to be fully redesigned under Schreyer was the new Kia Carens, which has been on sale in Europe since May 2013 and which brings a new visual dynamism to the family-oriented MPV segment.

The flair and appeal of Kia design is not only visible in the brand’s market success but also in the wealth of awards that Kia has received since Peter Schreyer joined the company’s ranks. In the globally renowned red dot design awards, ten Kia models have been awarded the coveted red dot, with the mid-size saloon Kia Optima and the new Kia pro_cee’d even receiving the Best of the Best award. Experts have also praised the overall strategy of Kia’s brand design, and the jury of the Automotive Brand Contest awarded the manufacturer the Best of the Best prize in the 2011 Brand Design category.

The Golden Steering Wheel is considered the most important European automobile prize. Founded in 1976, the award recognises the best new car models of the year, while the Honorary Golden Steering Wheel has been presented to leaders in the automotive industry since 1983. Two race drivers have also received this prestigious prize: Michael Schumacher (1993) and Lewis Hamilton (2007).

In the car categories, winners are selected either by Bild am Sonntag and AutoBild readers, or by an independent jury comprising 40 celebrities, race drivers, engineers, designers and motoring journalists. The winner of the Honorary Golden Steering Wheel is selected by representatives of the two publications and the Axel Springer publishing house.

92013696dc16 1 2.jpg Kia Also Presents His Forte5 With Turbo Engine At The SEMA Show

Las Vegas veterans know when it’s time to up the stakes and parlay a strong hand into a big win, which is exactly what Kia Motors America (KMA) is doing with its second-generation Forte5 hatchback.

Originally unveiled at the 2013 Chicago Auto Show earlier this year, the Forte5 SX’s eye-catching European-inspired hatchback design is complemented by a powerful 1.6-liter gasoline direct-injected (T-GDi) turbocharged four-cylinder engine putting out 201 horsepower and 195 lb.-ft. of torque, making the Forte5 SX and the all-new Forte Koup SX a high-performance pair worth betting on. The Forte5 is expected to go on sale in the fourth quarter of 2013, and pricing will be announced closer to launch.

Like its two-door Koup cousin, the Forte5 is offered in two trim levels, EX and SX, with two distinct engine choices. In typical Kia fashion, the Forte5 surprises customers with a long list of premium amenities and features not normally found in the compact segment. Under the hood, the Forte5 packs a punch, with the EX’s 2.0-liter GDi four-cylinder engine putting out a healthy 173 horsepower and 154 lb.-ft. of torque through a 6-speed automatic transmission. The performance-oriented SX comes standard with the hard-charging 1.6-liter turbo four-cylinder, a first for the Forte line. The SX also offers buyers the chance to pick their own gears with a standard 6-speed manual transmission, or they may opt for the available 6-speed automatic featuring steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

Standard Features and Technology Take Value to New Levels of Sophistication

True to Kia’s reputation for tremendous value, the all-new Forte5 offers an impressive array of amenities and technology. The base EX comes standard with 16-inch alloy wheels, UVO eServices with rear camera display, Bluetooth wireless technology, SiriusXM Satellite Radio3 , leather-wrapped steering wheel with integrated audio and cruise control buttons, FlexSteer, tilt and telescoping steering column, power windows, and LED positioning headlights with fog lights.

The SX trim ups the ante with standard 18-inch alloy wheels, dual chrome exhaust tips, and LED tail lights. Forte5 SX also offers an aggressive front fascia with larger bumper and grille openings, black gloss grille inserts, larger front brakes, alloy sport pedals as well as front and rear seats with carbon fiber-style accents. The lower front fascia and rear valance also feature carbon fiber-look trim.

Additionally, both EX and SX trim levels offer optional HID headlights, navigation system with HD Radio, sunroof, heated steering wheel, 10-way adjustable power driver’s seat, heated front seats and ventilated driver’s seat, heated rear outboard seats, leather-trimmed seating surfaces, SmartKey with push-button start, electric chromatic rearview mirror and dual-zone automatic climate control.

Stunning European Design Language

Conceived under the watchful eye of Kia’s global chief of design Peter Schreyer, the Forte5′s sophisticated hatchback profile, large wheels and aggressive posture give it a distinctly European appearance that speaks to its performance intentions. The chiseled body commands attention and continues Kia’s tradition as a design leader in the industry.

Like its Forte sedan counterpart, the Forte5′s swept headlights stretch deep into the front fenders and the raked windshield and broad shoulders give the front end a sleek, sporty appearance. LED positioning lights add a premium look to the front fascia. Moving around the vehicle, the large 18-inch wheels fill the wheel wells on the SX, and the hatchback profile affords a performance-oriented European personality. At the back, the rear hatch glass opens to reveal 23.2 cubic feet of usable cargo space. LED tail lights complete the premium feel of the exterior and a sporty rear valance with twin chrome exhaust tips maintains the Forte5′s edgy demeanor.

Sporty Cabin with Premium Features

Inside, the Kia Forte5 features premium materials and soft touch points. Large, easy-to-read, white-on-black gauges nestle deeply into the instrument cluster. Chrome accents around the HVAC controls and optional push-button start, along with carbon fiber-textured materials on the dash and seats, add a sporty touch. A grippy leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob are further evidence of the Forte5′s performance aspirations. Class-exclusive available features such as front and rear heated outboard seats, a ventilated driver’s seat and driver-selectable electric steering further set the Forte5 apart from its competition.

Thrilling Driving Experience

The Forte5 SX is the most powerful Forte built by Kia to date, utilizing a 1.6-liter GDi turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Power is seamlessly transferred to the front wheels via a six-speed manual or available automatic transmission. The GDi powerplant produces 201 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 195 lb.-ft. of torque between 1,750-4,500 rpm. The advanced powertrain features double overhead cams with dual continuously variable valve timing to help improve efficiency and performance.

The Forte5 EX comes standard with a 2.0-liter GDi powerplant producing 173 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 154 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,700 rpm. During durability testing, the engines are run 300 continuous hours at redline under full load then for an additional 20 hours at 10 percent above redline under full load.

To help further improve performance, the Forte5 features a sport-tuned suspension with a McPherson strut setup in front and a torsion beam rear design. The Forte5 rides on standard 205/55R-16 tires while 225/40R-18 tires are included with the SX trim for an even more sporting driving experience.

Taking a cue from Las Vegas’ high rollers, Kia Motors America (KMA) is upping the ante for its second-generation Forte Koup, adding turbocharged power to the sporty two-door for the 2014 model. First unveiled at the 2013 New York International Auto Show, the all-new Forte Koup SX boasts European-inspired design and performance to match with 201 horsepower and 195 lb.-ft. of torque. As equipped, the SX is the most powerful Forte Koup ever. Sales are expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2013, and pricing will be announced closer to the Koup’s launch.

Both the EX and SX come standard with a 6-speed manual transmission and offer an available 6-speed automatic featuring steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

Advanced Technology and Premium Features

In keeping with the rest of the Forte family, the all-new Forte Koup offers an impressive array of amenities and technology. The Koup EX comes standard with 16-inch alloy wheels, UVO eServices with Rear Camera Display, Bluetooth wireless technology, SiriusXM Satellite Radio, leather-wrapped steering wheel with integrated audio and cruise control buttons, FlexSteer, tilt and telescoping steering column, power windows and LED positioning headlights with fog lights.

Kia Motors America (KMA) provided the perfect rolling soundtrack to Las Vegas’ never-ending light show as the 2013 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show opened with five music-inspired all-new 2014 Soul vehicles, collectively making their presence known with a display worthy of the best Las Vegas nightclub parties.

The five sound-blasting creations feature music-themed builds including a DJ Booth Soul, an “Amped” Soul, the museum-like Music Memorabilia Soul, a Soul inspired by The Voice, which Kia has sponsored for four seasons, and a Soul highlighting the brand’s partnership with the Vans Warped Tour. All five Souls at SEMA tell their own unique story.

“Since the Kia Soul first arrived on the scene in America in 2009, it has established a very real and remarkable connection with music,” said Michael Sprague, executive vice president, marketing and communications, KMA. “After harnessing five major marketing campaigns music has become a core attribute of the Soul’s persona. The SEMA show presented the perfect opportunity to bring that personality to life.”

Amped Soul
