Hyundai recently made official their pursuit of the excellence in the developing of a new range of dual clutch gearboxes to improve fuel economy and to give the customers a thrill driving experience, instead of using dull CVT transmissions.
In a recent interview, Mike O’Brien (Hyundai Motor America vice president for product planning) said that the innefficiencies of the basic design of CVTs such as the frictional losses during acceleration, or the bigger pump needed to deliver the power to the wheels, are the sole reasons for Hyundai to go straight with the dual clutch further developments.
Also, dual clutch gearboxes are more suitable for sport-orientated drivers, with a greater driving experience. In words of O’Brien, ‘Dual-clutch has a better future with us. It has better fuel-economy advantages. It’s better for the enthusiast driver. It matches our brand philosophy better’.
Currently, Hyundai offers a dual clutch gearbox (DCT) in the Veloster lineup.
