Hyundai Motor Co. could see U.S. sales top 700,000 vehicles this year despite the Korean automaker’s tight vehicle supplies, a top executive said today. Hyundai Chairman Chung Mong-koo, who is credited with leading a focus on quality at the automaker since he took over in 2000, has capped production capacity globally, so plants will need to squeeze any added output from the current production schedule, said John Krafcik, head of Hyundai Motor America.

Last year Hyundai sold 645,691 cars and SUVs in the United States, an increase of 20 percent from 2010. “What (Chung) wants to do is assure we’re all focused on quality,” Krafcik said. “When he is satisfied that we’ve achieved this steady state from which we can grow, then we’ll have some opportunity” for adding capacity.

Hyundai, which has capped annual global capacity at around 7 million vehicles, has a U.S. plant in Montgomery, Ala. Hyundai affiliate Kia Motors also builds Hyundai cars at its factory in West Point, Georgia. Hyundai will continue to shift more sales from fleet customers, like car rental companies, to retail customers, Krafcik said.

Fleet sales, which are less profitable, accounted for 10 percent of U.S. sales last year, and Krafcik said the company plans to move that to as low as 5 percent, which could help shift as many as 100,000 sales to retail.

Fleet accounted for as much as 26 percent of the Korean automaker’s U.S. sales in 2009. Krafcik, at an event to show off the new Azera car and redesigned Genesis coupe, said he did not know what Chung’s time frame might be for allowing capacity to start rising again.

The Hyundai brand ended the first quarter with a 4.7 percent share of the U.S. new-car market, down from 5.1 percent in 2011. Krafcik believes it is unlikely the company will lose more market share.

Hyundai’s current inventory of vehicles is very tight. It started March with 55,000 vehicles at U.S. dealers and sold 70,000 cars that month, Krafcik said. That pattern is playing out again in April. “We are literally selling cars off the transporters.”

Krafcik said the weather was unusually warm in the first quarter and higher gasoline prices also drove consumers to dealers looking for more fuel-efficient vehicles. He said some of the better-than-expected first-quarter sales were sales that would normally come later in the year.

While the first quarter’s annual sales rate finished at 14.5 million vehicles, Krafcik said Hyundai was not ready to make that its forecast for the full year.

“We don’t know if it can hold that pace,” he told reporters. “We’re thinking more like low-14s”.

“We’re still seeing a lot of folks waiting to buy, but that waiting now seems to be reaching a point of breakage where they’ve got to buy. A lot of it depends on jobs and housing still, and unemployment continues to improve, which is great news.”

f2e357ad95hreyer.png Peter Schreyer sketches the design elements that define a luxury sedan.

When Kia finally make the debut of his full-size luxury sedan (or Flagship Sedan, as they call), the K9, createde a controversy and all kinds of opinions about if it seems more or less to BMW models. I’m agree with people think it seems a little, but that goes beyond BMW models. Then, today we will see how Peter Schreyer defines a “luxury sedan” or simply, the new K9.

In the above video, Peter Schreyer sketches the soon to be released Kia K9 luxury sedan, and describes how designing for a rear-wheel drive platform opens an opportunity for proportions and ratios that define luxury. But don’t take our word for it, watch the video, and feel free to read our breakdown below and share your thoughts.

Decoding the K9’s Luxury Sedan Design

Here are some design highlights and takeaways we pulled from Peter’s K9 explanation.

c185d6e3bege0041.jpg Peter Schreyer sketches the design elements that define a luxury sedan.

Generous wheelbase – Starting with a long wheelbase helps setup the right proportions needed for defining luxury design. The large wheels also create a strong stance and feeling of power, and Peter mentions that designers are always happy when they get to use big wheels.

Strength, Confidence and Power – Rear wheel engines sit further back from the front tires, which permits a greater length from the front wheel’s center to the first door cut, known as the ‘prestige distance’ in Germany. This in turn, pushes the A-pillar further back and creates a longer hood, which drops down to a shorter front upright overhang. These lengths help define the right proportions to instill a feeling of power and dignity. Peter describes the upright overhang and front section as having the strength, confidence and power via an analogy of a boxer’s attack stance that he often shares with fellow designers when they are working on a project.

Sheet Metal to Glass Ratio – The greenhouse, or glassed-in upper section of the car’s body, is tensioned to create the ideal sheet metal to glass ratio. This smaller glass area helps produce sense of privacy and safety while giving the car a sporty expression.

All the elements and proportions mentioned above in addition with a long sweeping shoulder and long rear overhang all work together to give the K9 a premium and luxury feeling, which may remind others of European rear wheel drive packages.

K9 Design Focus Summary

  • Balanced Proportions.
  • Sheet Metal to Glass Ratio.
  • Elegant Simplicity – Window Graphics and Surfaces.
  • Strong Stance.
  • Length of Overhangs.
  • Position and Size of the Greenhouse.

“This combination of power and styling for the K9 is a breakthrough for Kia, and it’s a breakthrough into new customer segments. The K9 signals our ability to be successful in competition with the European luxury brands. And for Kia, our customers, and for me – this car is like a dream” – Peter Schreyer.

efab40a2f538df b.jpg Official: 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe “LWB” to replace Veracruz.

With the All-new 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe presented at the NY AutoShow past wednesday, we only had one question, what about the Long Wheel Base version? But, HMA CEO John Krafcik confirmed today that the all-new seven passenger 2013 Santa Fe will replace the Veracruz model. “The Veracruz is going away,” Krafcik told. “It ends production around November.”

The seven-passenger Veracruz was a new nameplate for Hyundai when it rolled out in 2007. It never gained much acceptance in the U.S., so Hyundai has found a new way around that problem.

“It’s hard to establish a new brand name,” Krafcik said. “It can take $50 to $100 million dollars. Santa Fe is a golden nameplate for us, it’s a great product, and now it will be much more efficient in my marketing spend.”

Indeed. It will also be more efficient producing a five and seven-passenger Santa Fe than two different vehicles. From the B-pillar forward, there will only be minor differences between the two Santa Fe models.

History: The Kia Pride/Rio over the years.

99a8d665fcyears.png History: The Kia Pride/Rio over the years.

Sit down, buckle up and let’s take a trip down memory lane to explore a magical makeover story that would make Oprah Winfrey cry (well maybe not Oprah). Today on World Car News, and courtesy of Kia Buzz, we’re going to outline the design evolution of the Kia Rio and how it went from an ordinary subcompact to a top selling vehicle that has won multiple prestigious design awards.

1987 (Pride)

eb665178b450x150.jpg History: The Kia Pride/Rio over the years.bef261ace450x150.png History: The Kia Pride/Rio over the years.546235247350x150.png History: The Kia Pride/Rio over the years.8a4d0f536850x150.jpg History: The Kia Pride/Rio over the years.

The Rio’s origin dates back to an earlier model which was known as the Kia Pride in 1987. This mini hatchback was sold in Korea from 1987-1997 and was a joint project between Kia, Ford and Mazda. It was sold in the US as the Ford Festiva. Fitted with both 1.1- B1 and 1.3-liter B3 engines with 54 and 72 hp respectively. SAIPA built the Kia Pride in Iran under license and the company introduced a pickup body style in 2008 under the name “SAIPA Pick-Up”, with a 500-kilogram (1,100 lb) payload.

1994 (Avella)

9536c2c6c450x150.jpg History: The Kia Pride/Rio over the years.5cc961cb8750x150.png History: The Kia Pride/Rio over the years.516032577750x150.jpg History: The Kia Pride/Rio over the years.baf063857950x150.jpg History: The Kia Pride/Rio over the years.

The Pride became the Kia Avella in domestic Korea and was sold as the Ford Aspire in the US. All Avellas came standard with 13 inch wheels, a four-speaker stereo, heated rear glass, anti-lock brakes (ABS), driver’s side airbag, and door impact beams. It was also the first South Korean car in its class to offer dual airbags and ABS-brakes. While the standard Avellas received the 73 PS (54 kW) 1.3 liter Mazda B3 engine, higher spec versions were available both with an SOHC and a more powerful DOHC version of the 1.5 liter B5 engine. The 105 PS (77 kW) DOHC version was only available in the four-door Avella Delta.

1999 (Rio)

f48b19ee9050x150.jpg History: The Kia Pride/Rio over the years.a7c0fad79850x150.png History: The Kia Pride/Rio over the years.5c741a013750x150.jpg History: The Kia Pride/Rio over the years.d92f65d0e250x150.jpg History: The Kia Pride/Rio over the years.

The Avella was discontinued in 1999 and both it and the Pride (first generation Ford Festiva) were transformed to the Kia Rio (except it still goes by Pride in Korea). The Rio was now available in both hatchback and 4-door sedan body styles and featured a 96 horsepower, 1.5-litre DOHC gasoline engine from 2001-2002. The domestic Korean market versions did not include the 1.6-liter version, as the South Korean taxation system heavily penalizes cars of more than 1,500 cc. Claimed outputs for the domestic versions (JIS) were higher, at 84 hp for the little 1.3 and 108 hp for the DOHC 1.5.

Yes, these name changes might be confusing, but simply think of it as the classic tomato saying, “You say ‘tomayto,’ I say ‘tomahto.’Sometimes a car model goes by different names in various markets and regions.

2002 (Rio Facelift)

747c39647150x150.jpg History: The Kia Pride/Rio over the years.3b4667e5f850x150.jpg History: The Kia Pride/Rio over the years.6ae9c5c28850x150.jpg History: The Kia Pride/Rio over the years.7326c6151a50x150.jpg History: The Kia Pride/Rio over the years.

A few years later, the Rio received a slight redesign with new exterior and interior styling along with engine, suspension and brake upgrades. In Europe, the facelifted Rio received minor changes in external look and engine improvement of the 1.3 from 75 hp to 80 hp at 5,500 rpm, and 86 lb·ft (117 N·m) at 3,000 rpm.

2006 (Second Generation Rio)

A fairy godmother transformed Cinderella’s pumpkin into a stunning horse carriage, and in a similar fashion, bringing Peter Schreyer on board as Kia’s Chief Designer Officer was indeed magical. Three engines are available, a 1.6 litre DOHC engine with 110 hp, a lesser 1.4 litre version with 96 hp and a 1.5 CRDi engine with 110 hp. However, in the US market only the 1.6L gasoline engine is offered, in two body styles: a four-door-sedan and a five-door hatch.

In 2007, the South Korean government began testing approximately 4,000 pre-production Rio hybrid-electric models, with parent company Hyundai Kia Automotive Group later announcing and subsequently withdrawing anticipated release dates for the hybrid model

2010 (Second Generation Facelifted Rio)

In 2010 the Rio embraced Kia’s distinctive tiger nose grille and added some modern and high-tech features such as Bluetooth hands-free phone operation and a new gauge cluster.

2011 – Present (Third Generation Rio)

And after 25 years of enhanced design, performance, safety, features and fuel efficiency – we arrive at the present day All-New Rio. It has both style and performance with a choices of 1.2 “Kappa”, 1.4 “Gamma” engines and the 1.6 GDi (gasoline direct injection) engine, multiple trims, colors and options to meet the needs of drivers from all walks of life. Talk about the power to surprise!
